Smithfield Hone - Historic American Fine Grain Sharpening Stone - Suitable for Razors - CHOOSE YOUR STONE - Group 2
This is a historically well known but until now unavailable micaceous slate whetstone from Smithfield, Rhode Island. With documented use back into the 1700s, It is a mid-grit to finishing stone that works fast and leaves an excellent keen edge. For a point of reference, it is hard and finishes like a hard coticule but with slurry cuts fast like a La Veniette of other quick coticule which quickly darkens its slurry. Traditionally used as a scythe stone when the primary livelihood of local residents was agriculture and individuals were very likely to not own or hone their own razors, over a year of testing has proven to us that this hone is indeed excellent for razor and fine instrument or tool sharpening duties.
With a moderately thick slurry raised by 600-1200 diamond plate, it is suitable as a bevel setter. Following a typical slurry dilution method of honing and finishing on water a keen comfortable edge is quickly achieved. For an even finer edge we recommend following with a finer fishing hone; our Whiteheart Hone which is collected from a location close to this one’s origin is a fine choice.
These hones are hand collected from the original quarry site, cut, lapped and tested by GSG owner M. Wojtaszek. Each hone has had one surface lapped and all edges chamfered and is ready for immediate use.
Use only water as a lubricant.
These are natural stones, and as such the color, size and shape will vary slightly from stone to stone. A selection of historical references can be viewed in the images, as well as the current selection of available hones.
