Hardness:
Vintage Atagoyama Akapin Koppa. Atagoyama is a western, Tanba area mine which sits in close proximity to Ohira/Mizukihara. Modern Atagoyama are considered "Ball Stones" which are typically composed with loose grain structure and thus highly susceptible to cracking and splitting. This Akapin is composed of coarser grain when compared to most finishing stones, classifying it as a Naka Toishi or medium grit stone. This particular piece has a grain size consistent with a typical 1000 grit stone. It is a softer stone which releases abrasive mud easily. This viscous mud is highly abrasive and fast cutting, perfect for razor bevel setting. This type of Naka Toishi is perfect for removing 1000 grit synthetic stone scratches quickly and replaces them with a blanket of haze created by the coarse particles of varying sizes. Can be used for all blades including knives, razors, and tools. A unique medium grit natural stone which is never seen on the market today!
