Hardness: Medium Hard/ Medium Fine
Newly mined Iyoto stone from Ehime. These Iyoto are considered Naka Toishi, or medium grit. They range in hardness and refinement capabilities with a wide range of potential performance characteristics depending on the type. There are 10+ different types of Iyoto which are currently being produced. This type is called Shiro or white. The stone's base is pure white with small black spots, reminiscent of Goma. This example is very hard and quite fine for Naka Toishi. Perfect for razors, knives and tools. Like many of these Iyoto, it is capable of producing a fine finish with water only. When slurry is forced, the stone's abrasive is released and the cutting speed drastically increases. Creating slurry produces a coarse, medium grit experience while water only yields a much more refined finish. This Shiro sits on the fine end of the polishing spectrum, especially for a medium-grit stone. It can be used to finish knives and some tools. When used for razor honing, it is capable of bevel setting with forced slurry, yet fine enough to pre finish with water only.
