Shobudani Tomae Asagi Collector Grade Japanese Whetstone
This exceptional Japanese whetstone was purchased by us from the estate of a collector of fine Japanese hones. We have thoroughly tested it and our results are shared below.
It measures 205 mm (8.07 inches) long × 75 mm (2.95 inches) wide × 30 mm (1.18 inches) tall, and weighs 1255 g (44.27 oz / 2.77 lbs).
Hardness: 4.8
This super hard Shobudani Asagi is perfect for razors users looking for a stone which is a bit challenging in the sense that care and diligence must be afforded while honing to avoid lifting the spine etc. This stone is very unique in that it falls around the category of super hard but has an interesting and nuanced feel. When honing water only, the hardness can be felt but there's a slight hint of cushion which is similar to the elasticity which many high quality stones demonstrate. The elasticity allows for more pressure to be used but in this case, adding too much pressure can lead to edge damage via angle change. All of that said, if the stone is used with finesse, the user will be rewarded with a super keen and comfortable shave. This stone should not be mistaken with anything other than a pure finisher and in this case, Nagura Progressions seem to be the most effective method for this stone. When honing with Mikawa Nagura, the feedback from the Nagura is very clear and edge progress the same. A deep layer Tomae such as Shiki Tomae with its high hardness, appearance and fine particles. It should be noted that these Shobudani Asagi were sourced from KVJ who has a long standing and expert level knowledge base, technical skill level, deep understanding and impeccable source for these stones. You can rest assured that this stone is authentic, fully tested by multiple, reliable sources and the highest quality available.
