Restored Vintage Razors vs New Straight Razors and Japanese Kamisori

Restored Vintage Razors vs New Straight Razors and Japanese Kamisori

A restored vintage straight razor, a new German or French razor, and a traditional Japanese kamisori can all deliver an excellent shave. The right choice depends on the blade you enjoy using, the craftsmanship that appeals to you, and how you want to develop your shaving routine.

At Griffith Shaving Goods, we have been restoring and selling vintage razors since 2010. Alongside our restored selection, we offer new straight razors from makers such as DOVO, Ralf Aust, and Thiers Issard, plus Japanese kamisori. Here is how these options compare.

Restored Vintage Straight Razors from Griffith Shaving Goods

A vintage razor restored by GSG offers the character of an older blade with the preparation needed for regular shaving. Our restoration work addresses both appearance and function, with each razor receiving individual attention according to its condition.

Depending on the razor, that work may include cleaning and polishing the blade, repairing or restoring the scales, and correcting problems with the assembly. Once those repairs are complete, we hone the blade through a progression of synthetic and natural stones, strop it on cordovan leather, and sanitize it before sale. Our restored razors listed as shave ready are prepared for shaving when they arrive.

Individual listings describe the blade dimensions, grind, hone wear, scale condition, and any remaining blemishes. Some razors retain patina or other signs of age, which we describe so you know what to expect.

Vintage razors appeal to shavers who enjoy historical makers, distinctive blade shapes, or materials and details seldom seen in current production. They can also offer excellent value, although rarity and collector interest may place certain examples above the price of a new razor. Most restored pieces are individual finds, so the selection changes as razors are sold.

New German Straight Razors from DOVO and Ralf Aust

A new German straight razor is an appealing choice if you want a freshly made folding razor from an established Solingen maker. GSG offers DOVO and Ralf Aust models with different blade widths, point shapes, finishes, and scale materials.

DOVO provides a broad choice of styles, including stainless steel options. Ralf Aust offers traditional hollow ground carbon steel razors, with models ranging from straightforward round point designs to more decorative versions.

The individual model matters more than a general label such as German razor. A larger blade or a more elaborate handle may appeal to you, but neither automatically produces a better shave. Choose the size, point, and materials that suit your preferences.

New French Straight Razors from Thiers Issard

Thiers Issard continues to make straight razors in Thiers, France, combining traditional production with a wide choice of finishes and handle materials. Our selection includes Thiers Issard and Le Grelot models, with options for shavers who prefer simple styling as well as more decorative blades.

Many models feature hollow ground carbon steel blades, including Carbonsong 135 steel. Blade etching, spine decoration, and scale materials help distinguish the models, while blade width and grind influence how they handle.

A new French razor is a strong option for someone who enjoys European craftsmanship and wants to choose a current model with a particular combination of blade and scales.

Honing Your New Razor Before Shipment

Edge preparation deserves as much attention as the razor itself. GSG offers complimentary honing upon request on our DOVO, Ralf Aust, and Thiers Issard razors. We particularly recommend this service for DOVO razors as an additional quality check and to bring the edge to our shaving standards.

To request honing, leave a note at checkout and allow an additional two to three business days before shipment. Check the individual listing for details. Starting with a properly prepared edge is especially helpful while you are learning to shave and strop.

Japanese Kamisori Razors

A traditional Japanese kamisori offers a different approach to straight razor shaving. Its fixed handle and relatively short cutting edge give it a different balance and grip from a European folding razor. Traditional examples commonly have an asymmetrical grind and laminated construction, with hard cutting steel joined to a softer iron body.

GSG offers Japanese kamisori in both newly made and vintage forms. Examples include hand forged Tomita razors and Henkotsu new old stock, meaning older razors that remained unused. Tomita models are offered in right and left handed versions, and we provide additional finish honing at no charge upon request. Our listed Henkotsu new old stock examples are already honed and shave ready.

Pay particular attention to handedness and blade geometry when choosing a kamisori. An asymmetrical kamisori has different honing requirements from a symmetrical Western blade, and the fixed handle calls for an adjustment in technique. For a shaver interested in Japanese blade making and a different handling experience, it can be a rewarding choice.

Choosing Your First Straight Razor

For many beginners, a 5/8 or 6/8 folding razor with a round point is a practical place to start. A restored vintage razor from GSG and a new German or French razor can both fit that role. Give priority to a comfortable blade size and a properly honed edge, then choose the styling and materials you like.

A kamisori can also be learned as a first razor, but its grip and asymmetrical geometry require guidance specific to that design. If you are unsure which direction to take, contact us with the models you are considering and your shaving experience.

Caring for Your Razor

All of these razors need regular stropping, careful drying after use, and occasional honing as the edge wears. Carbon steel blades need particular attention to moisture and benefit from a suitable protective oil during storage. Stainless steel also needs to be cleaned and dried carefully.

Plan for a suitable strop when budgeting for your first razor. You can learn honing separately as your experience grows; beginning with an edge prepared for shaving lets you concentrate on handling and stropping.
