This stone is most likely a combination layer stone containing mixed layers of Hon Suita and Aisa.It is very rare to see Aiiwatani Hon Suita and a stone this large, even more so. The stone has a dense, firm feel while remaining user friendly. This is likely do to the mixture of Suita\/Aisa. This stone is quite fine for an Aiiwatani Suita which is very rare to see as most seen are softer, Tenjou Suita. This stone has a very smooth feel for a hard and fine stone. Razors can be finished using this stone as it's base has plenty of hardness for efficient particle breakdown. This stone is capable of varying finishes depending on how it's used. Diamond plate slurry results in an aggressive, fast cutting stone resulting in a hazier finish. When used with water only and light pressure, the stone is capable of finishing with a considerably more fine, bright mirror-like finish. When used for knives\/tools, the stone performs similarly with inky black swarf and little self slurry when used standalone. When slurry is forced, the stone speeds up and depending on the slurry medium, the stone can finish either hazy or bright and mirror like. When used with water only and declining amounts of pressure, the stone will polish to a bright, clear finish and brings out details in the cladding. A beautiful stone visually, with excellent size and high performance characteristics. This stone was mined decades ago by one of our wholesalers who is a generational member of the Kyoto Natural Whetstone Association. Tsukinowa is a mine located southeast of the summit of Mt. Atago, which is the division point between Nishimono and Higashimono (East\/West). Tsukinowa is a Honishinori mine, just like Nakayama, Okudo, Shobudani, Ozuku, etc. Tsukinowa gets it's namesake from the Tsukinowa temple, which is located close by. Although not well known to the western world, domestically in Japan, Tsukinowa stones have been used for the final polish of swords, used interchangeably with Narutaki for Jizuya. Narutaki and Tsukinowa stones are known for their high abrasive density and fine polishing characteristics. They come in many levels of hardness and the super hard stones are used by barbers for razors. This gorgeous Aisa\/Namito layer Asagi is a super hard stone and perfect for razor finishing. The stone's Hunter Green base referred to as \"Azuki\" (Beans) is engulfed with multifaceted, dense Namazu. For its hardness, the stone is very effective in removing scratches while finishing at an extremely high level. This stone's unique camouflage look and Namazu gives it a \"soft stone\" appearance but this piece is very hard and fine. This Tsukinowa is super hard, much like the Kiita. This Asagi is a notch less hard but still super hard, by all means. Perfect for razor finishing with Mikawa Nagura as the hard base presents clear Nagura Feedback. The area around the stamp has been partially processed by the Craftsman in hopes of providing a \"Guide\" to lapping. This Nagura has been sealed with 4 layers of clear lacquer on the sides\/backside. This giant Botan was has a divided surface for sharpening, currently due to the stamp placement. The stone starts to slope where the white transitions into the orange stripes on the lower face. The stone was stamped, front and center and we have applied a coat of thin lacquer to that area in hopes of preserving the stamps. The orange area on the upper face is a bit lower than the rest and can be lapped to complete the white surface. In regards to performance, this Botan is on the fine side of the spectrum for Botan. Perfect for razors and excellent for polishing as it begins to bring out fine details in iron and steel. It retains a lighter toned mist and the finish is unique, perfectly setting the stage in it's niche in a polishing progression. This fine quality translates to razors as well and will certainly make the ultimate Naka toishi for nearly any application. The stone was stamped on the side many years ago and was being saved as a possible stone for direct sharpening. This Nagura has been sealed on the sides with 4 layers of transparent lacquer. This gigantic Botan has a relatively flat surface for a piece of rough ore. We have lapped a couple smaller areas in order to execute the testing process to our level of satisfaction. The end user can choose whether or not they would like to flatten the entire surface. There are a few lower spots on the surface which I decided to lacquer as a countermeasure to standing water. The lacquer was applied thinly and it will lap off easily when the stone is totally resurfaced. Nearly perfect except the dropped corner. The stone is a very high level razor finishing stone with moderate cutting speed and extremely fine polishing capabilities. A bit hard for knives and tools but has a slightly forgiving feel which allows it to be used as such where an extremely high polish is desired. The stone has a beige, nearly Haubute base color with dense patches of goma. Perfect for nagura progressions and fast enough for standalone use.
