This is a very high quality piece of Nakayama for certain. There is a small area near the bottom of the stone where the lines meet and only that spot is mildly toxic. It will be repaired and ready to use upon shipping. This small flaw takes nothing away from the insane quality and performance of this stone. after all, they are natural stones. For water only razor honing, the stone has a dense, hard feel but it's not void of feeling at all. There are differing levels of tiny granularity that keep things interesting. When used in conjunction with a harder base stone, the Nagura's slurry is abrasive and more coarse than the base stones particles. This allows for a situation in which a hard, fine base stone can serve as a medium grit stone as well. In practical use, the Nagura's slurry is granular in texture and a bit dry feeling overall. The initial granular texture breaks down rather quickly with impressive range of finish from start to finish. Hideriyama stones are known for their fast cutting ability, user friendly nature and rarity. With the mine closing recently due to an accident, no more Hideriyama stones will be mined in the near future making them increasingly more rare. This stone double sided with each side performing a bit differently. The stamped side of the stone is a bit harder and more fine. The stones cutting power is immediately noticeable when honing water only. The stone will self slurry lightly on the stamped side. on the back side, the stone is softer and self slurry is obviously more prevalent. This stone is perfect for removing medium grit scratches and either finishing or pre finishing. Hard enough and fine enough to slow down the cutting speed but upon forcing slurry, the stones abrasive content is high but releasing the abrasive particles is difficult to its hardness and density. The end user can choose whether or not they would like to flatten the entire surface. There are a few lower spots on the surface which I decided to lacquer as a countermeasure to standing water.
