Hardness: 4.3
Extremely rare Hideriyama Uroko with impressive hardness. Unlike most Hideriyama stones, this Uroko is extremely hard and quite fine. The hardest Hideriyama stones we ever seen. This particular example is extra large and double sided! This example has a hard base with fast cutting action. This stone is unique in that although it's hard, it has a super easy going feel when sharpening. This example features a beige, creamy base with Renge. These Uroko stones are named after Fish scales. This is likely in reference to the colored line - like patterns on the surface of the stone. So far, none of the Uroko stones have been negatively affected by the line - like patterns so I am comfortable in stating that they're harmless and only serve as a visual consideration. Although quite firm, this stone has the tendency towards creating a similar type of finish which is typical for Hideriyama, but more refined overall. These Uroko stones create a beautiful Kasumi finish with striking contrast and depth. Perfect for Honyaki knives!
A photo of the stone's polishing ability on soft and hard steels of a Japanese kanna (plane) blade are shown.
