Stone Testing Details:
Hardness: LV 5
Another beautiful, organic Kiita (Yellow) raw stone from Nalayama mine. These large pieces of rough stone are becoming increasingly rare in Japan. The Nakayama mine stopped producing stone in the 1970’s. This piece was stored in the warehouse of a plane Craftsman who collects old stones. The stone is very hard and dense making it perfect for razors. Water only honing resulted in a very smooth feeling. There is a bit of texture that is very forgiving for the hardness. With light diamond slurry, the stone speeds way up and black swarf is released immediately when applying pressure. The stone will continue to cut with diamond plate slurry indicating an extremely grit rich razor stone with high cutting capabilities. Mikawa Nagura progressions are a dream on this stone. The feedback is crystal clear and easily read. This stone can be used after a 1kish bevel setter directly after, especially when using diamond plate slurry, followed by Tomo Nagura to refine the edge. The shaves were extremely smooth after the slurry is worked and broken down.
For knives, this stone is very smooth and fine. There is a level of elasticity that prevents the stone from scratching the knife, making for a smooth and even finish.
A photo of the resulting polish left on a high quality Japanese knife is shown.
