Kato era Nakayama Kuramaguchi Kiita with Maruka stamp! Before Hatanaka Whetstone Co was founded, Kato San owned and operated the Nakayama mine. There were various mining shafts and ore pits within the Nakayama mine and the most famous and popular Nakayama of all time are Kuramaguchi Maruka. Kuramaguchi is the name of the mining shaft/ore pit where the Kuramaguchi were mined from. Kuramaguchi Nakayama contain microscopic Su holes similar to Suita stones, which occured in all layers with the Kuramaguchi shaft. Kuramaguchi Nakayama are known for their increased cutting speed and detailed and unique Kasumi finish. Quintessential bright yellow Kiita type Hon Tomae. This is a harder Kiita yet a notch less so than the Iromono #0279. Still hard enough for Nagura progressions and just hard enough to allow for nice slurry breakdown. Smooth, gliding feel when sharpening heavier blades and it's extremely inky and fast when pressure is applied. Slightly sticky feeling but still super smooth. Great buoyancy for water only as well.
