Narutaki Kiita Kan Koppa Japanese Natural Finishing Toishi Whetstone
Another really old stone from the sword polishers. It is from the Hon Narutaki mine, as opposed to the general geographic term which the name is used for as well. Stones from the Hon Narutaki mine are very rare and collectable. This stone is absolutely ridiculous in terms of feedback. I've never felt this amount of elasticity in a stone. It's a very fine stone but attempting to quantify the hardness is an exercise in futility. It has a firm feel but once any pressure is applied, the cushion almost sucks the bevel into place and allows for extremely smooth sharpening. The most interesting aspect is that the stone doesn't self slurry as much as it feels like it should. It has medium cutting speed. Water only honing is exceedingly smooth and easy going. Diamond plate slurry is very interesting as the stone finally releases itself and the slurry is very grit rich and fast cutting. Following this process with a Tomo Nagura will ensure a smooth and comfortable shave. For knives this is a knife polishers dream stone. As mentioned prior, the elasticity of the stone allows for a smooth and consistent Kasumi finish with huge contrast between the hard steel and soft iron. Collector grade quality stone in affordable koppa format.
A photo of the stone's polishing ability on a high quality Japanese kitchen knife is shown.
