Nagura 1:
Medium hardness Aiiwatani Karasu Tomo Nagura. Aiiwatani produced many Karasu stones, most of which are extremely dense, hard and fine. This example is noticeably more soft and easy going when compared to most Karasu from Aiiwatani. This is an extra large format Tomo Nagura and can certainly double as a hand held hone, adding to its versatility. When used as a slurry medium (Nagura), this piece is quick to release itself when used with bass stones of 4+ hardness. One of the drawbacks of some of the harder Karasu is that they're less abrasive, even when slurry is forced. This particular Karasu is grit rich and fast cutting and also releases abrasive easily, making it a fast cutting option. This Tomo Nagura is certainly not the most fine and mirror finishing, but it makes up for its lack of reflectivity in cutting performance and uniformity of finish, which is a bright, hazy Kasumi finish. When using the stone as a hand held koppa, it performs very smoothly and silky in nature, releasing it's rich abrasive easily. For final finishing, you must keep the slurry thin and break it down with extremely light pressure. A beautiful Karasu specimen which is easy to work with!
Nagura 2:
Medium hardness Aiiwatani Karasu Tomo Nagura. Aiiwatani produced many Karasu stones, most of which are extremely dense, hard and fine. This Tomo Nagura is easy to use and releases abrasive slurry when used with bass stones over 4+ hardness. This Tomo Nagura is a refreshing change for a Karasu stone being medium hardness and fast. Often times, Aiiwatani stones are overlooked and undervalued in the world of jnats, taking a back seat to mines like Nakayama, Shobudani and Okudo. However, in our experience, high quality Aiiwatani stones are nearly indistinguishable from Nakayama stones. This smooth and easy going Karasu is great for removing medium fine grit scratches and is also capable of finishing razors with proper technique and time.
