Anchor Finishing Hone - Historic American Fine Grain Sharpening Stone - Suitable for Razors - CHOOSE YOUR STONE - Group 3
Thoroughly tested and proven to be an excellent polisher of high quality steel, the Anchor Razor Hone is a rather unique and rare stone produced and distributed solely by Griffith Shaving Goods.
Composed of pure cumberlandite, this stone is found only in a few sites in our home state of Rhode Island and nowhere else on the globe. First identified hundreds of years ago by Native American tribes and English colonists the stone has a high iron oxide content which led to it's use as an iron ore and a which gives it magnetic properties (a magnet will stick to it). We suspect that this richness in iron oxide give the stone its fine and fast polishing properties.
The Anchor Razor hone is of medium hardness and is very dense and heavy. Each hone individually collected, cut and finely lapped by hand. The edge it give is very fine but somewhat crisp, similar to a fine coticule edge but even finer. We recommend homing to an 8K level before moving to this stone. After stropping, it provides an edge that is very keen yet extremely comfortable.
It is also a very useful stone for final polishing on woodworking tools, luthier tools, surgical instruments etc.
Although not radiometrically dated, cumberlandite is considered to be of Proterozoic age. At this time, the land that would become Rhode Island was part of a volcanic island arc called Avalonia. When one of these volcanoes erupted and the magma chamber cooled, various minerals crystallized and settled to the bottom of the chamber forming cumberlandite.
