Belgian Pierre Du Levant - 5.5" x 2.7" Vintage Natural Straight Razor Sharpening Hone Stone
The Levant, or "Pierre du levant" whetstone is a natural sharpening stone that was historically mined in the old coticule quarries of Salmchateau/Vielsalm in Belgium. No longer mined commercially, they were taken from the eastern-most coticule quarry of Thier du Mont, hence their name "Levant", which means eastern. These stones all come from an old tool shop in Belgium that closed somewhere in the 1950’s.
These are a little coarser stones, moderately fast which were used mostly for sharpening tools in older times. However, they are also capable for honing straight razors from bevel setting through the progression. The use of oil during finishing gives a sharp and smooth edge that is capable for shaving. This stone measures 5.5 inches long x 2.7 inches wide and approximately 3/4 thick and has been lapped flat by us on one side. It is ready to use for razor honing and a variety of other sharpening purposes.
These are natural stones, so their appearance may vary from the photos shown.NOTE: Razor is shown to give an idea of size only and is not included.
