NOTE: This listing is to purchase one hone only. We are showing a few examples in the photos so that you can see examples of the various stone coloring, figuring and surface conditions.
Offered here are rare and celebrated Water of Ayr sharpening stones , a piece of history from the original workshop on the Dalmore estate in rural Stair, Scotland. In widespread use since the late 1700s if not before, the  Water of Ayr (WOA) provides an exceptionally precise finish with a grain size ranging from 9000 to 11,000. This charcoal-gray to black stone, resembling a black Escher, is traditionally used for razors and scalpels. It offers a silky soft feel during honing and is ideal for razor sharpening.

As new but old stock, each stone comes with rough-sawn surface as cut at the workshop on Dalmore Estate.
These are hand quarried, natural stones, and as such the color, size and shape will vary slightly from stone to stone. The stone surfaces are pictured dry, and finally wet in the last 2 photos. A selection of representative examples can be seen in the photos.

Lapping Service: For those seeking immediate use, we offer a lapping service at checkout to flatten and smoothen the stone's surface. Add this item to your cart Lapping Service and we will flatten your stone before shipment up to a fine finish. Please allow an extra 2-3 business days after purchase for us to perform this service.
