Note: This razor came to use in this case which we believe is sterling silver and not silver plate. It has some faint markings which could not be made out under magnification. Additionally, it has a nice patina so we elected to keep the surface as-found and unpolished.
Razor Specifics:
Age Range: Mid-Late 1800s
Manufacturer: Mappin & Webb, Sheffield England
Restoration: Fully restored- The blade was masterfully reground to correct blade geometry and remove detrimental wear, fully polished, the restored original scales were fitted and finally the assembled razor was honed and stropped to a super-keen and comfortable shaving edge
Blade
Material: Crucible Carbon Steel
Width: 11/16" wide from edge to top of spine at the widest point
Grind: Near wedge
Hone Wear: None at all, careful regrinding has left the blade with no hone wear and a thin, even bevel at the edge
Tip: Barbers notch
Finishes: Crocus (mirror) finish all over
Condition: Excellent, only the most minor blemishes (patina) remaining in the steel, commensurate with its age
Shave ready: Yes, freshly honed with one layer of tape on the spine, stropped and sanitized in Barbicide, fully ready to shave
Scales
Material: Original pre-1900 elephant ivory
Pinning: Nickel silver pins and washers, the pivot has been replaced
Condition: Excellent, just a few small defects, glossy & highly polished, the blade centers well between them
About our restoration and honing process
Each one of our restored razors is brought back to life with a passion and attention to detail like it would be an addition to our own collection or user rotation. Many years of restoration experience and hundreds of restored razors sold around the world have refined our processes, but each razor is still given the time and individual attention it needs. Our vintage razors undergo dozens of steps involving blade unpinning (where necessarily) metal grinding/sanding with a range of different diameter and hardness wheels with various grits of abrasive and polishes. Scales are straightened and repaired when necessary, wet sanded and polishing. After the razor’s cosmetic and functional repairs are completed, a multistep honing process using a range of synthetic and natural sharpening stones is used to bring each razor back to keen and comfortable shaving sharpness. Finally stropping is performed on one of our cordovan leather strops and the blade is sanitized in Barbicide hospital-grade disinfectant. If for any reason you are not satisfied with our restored razors, please contact us to discuss return options. Your satisfaction is our ultimate goal.
