This exceptional Japanese whetstone was purchased by us from the estate of a collector of fine Japanese hones. We have thoroughly tested it and our results are shared below.

It measures 207 mm (8.15 inches) long × 77 mm (3.03 inches) wide × 32 mm (1.26 inches) tall, and weighs 1456 g (51.37 oz / 3.21 lbs).

A photo of the stone's polishing ability on a Japanese kanna (plane) blade is shown.

Hardness: 4.8
Extremely high quality Shobudani Tomae Mizu Asagi for final finishing. These ultra hard and fine Shobudani represent a great value in terms of rarity and price vs performance. On par with top level Nakayama which typically demands twice the price. In terms of practical use, one would be hard pressed to find a better performer at this price point. Definitely a lower layer Tomae (Shiki Tomae) which are ubiquitous for their fine, harder nature. Perfect for razor final finishing using either Mikawa Nagura progressions or standalone finishing. Super hard but user friendly enough for some tools. When using Mikawa Nagura for razors, the feedback is crisp and clear. Moderate cutting speed overall but quite fast taking into account the overall hardness. Extremely fine particles, capable of bright mirror-like finish.
