Offered here are rare Scotch Dual Hones, comprised of Tam O Shanter and Water of Ayr hones in a dual sided glued combination hone. Each hone measures approximately 4 7/8” (124mm) long x 1 1/2” (38mm) wide and 3/4"-7/8" (19-22mm) thick.

Tam O Shanter hone:

Characterized by a speckled pattern, these stones exhibit an aesthetically stunning appearance. The white Tam O'Shanter, prized for its ability to achieve "very fine cuts," surpasses the grit rating of ordinary gray Tam O Shanter hones and approaches 12,000 grit. Its applications extend to meticulous edge finishing or the removal of micro blemishes, resulting in extra keen cutting edges. Notably, these stones demonstrate compatibility with razors susceptible to micro-chipping. Employing a slurry enhances the stone's polishing efficiency, elevating the speed at which they perform.

Water of Ayr hone:
In widespread use since the late 1700s if not before, the Water of Ayr (WOA) provides an exceptionally precise finish with a grain size ranging from 9000 to 11,000. This charcoal-gray to black stone, resembling a black Escher, is traditionally used for razors and scalpels. It offers a silky soft feel during honing and is ideal for razor sharpening.

As new but old stock, each stone comes with lapped surfaces and could be used immediately or lapped for ultimate flatness. These are hand quarried, natural stones, and as such the color, size and shape will vary slightly from stone to stone. The stone surfaces are pictured dry.
