This example of a vintage combination Coticule / Belgian Blue Whetstone for your consideration measures 190mm long x 45mm wide at one end and 37mm wide at the other and is between 20mm and 25mm thick. This stone has been lapped flat and the edges chamfered on all sides and is ready to use. In my opinion this is a rare stone, being very old (circa 1800s or even earlier) it has a typical trapezoidal profile and is harder than most modern coticules. It was likely set into a wooden box originally. The coticule layer has a very marbled appearance, which is typical of many "hybrid" coticule layers such as Les Latneuses. There are many black seams or manganese lines which make their way to the honing surface, but none of those affect honing. I have tested it with quite a few razors and it is typical of most very old vintage coticules in that it is very hard and is a slow cutter with slurry (though still relatively fast compared to it's hardness) and very slow on water, but is a great polisher.

Coticules are a wonderful razor hone that I use quite regularly. They are a fast cutting yet fine and versatile stone that I use right after a bevel setting stone, right onto a finish or followed by a finer stone. A small modern slurry stone (also coticule and BBW combination) is included. The stone is shown dry, and then wet in the final 4 photos to show its coloring and grain.
