Age Range: Early 1900s
Manufacturer: Unknown (unfortunately I am not able to translate any of the stamps)
Restoration: Fully restored- The Omote (non-stamped) side of the blade was reground to remove honing wear, fully polished and cleaned, black oxide plated and honed to shaving sharpness on Japanese synthetic and natural hones (all in-house by GSG founder Matt W.)
Blade
Material: Hard Carbon Steel forge welded to softer iron backing
Dimensions: 17mm wide from edge to top of spine at the widest point, 47mm cutting edge, 147mm overall length
Grind: Typical asymmetrical Kamisori grind
Hone Wear: Little, careful regrinding has left the razor with a thin bevel
Tip: Muted square tip
Finishes: Glazed (satin) finish on the blade faces, Crocus (mirror) finish on the tang and spine
Condition: Excellent, only some very light blemishes remaining in the steel
Shave ready: Yes, freshly honed, stropped and sanitized, fully ready to shave
About our restoration and honing process
Each one of our restored razors is brought back to life with a passion and attention to detail like it would be an addition to our own collection or user rotation. Many years of restoration experience and hundreds of restored razors sold around the world have refined our processes, but each razor is still given the time and individual attention it needs. Our vintage razors undergo dozens of steps involving blade unpinning (where necessarily) metal grinding/sanding with a range of different diameter and hardness wheels with various grits of abrasive and polishes. Scales are straightened and repaired when necessary, wet sanded and polishing. After the razor’s cosmetic and functional repairs are completed, a multistep honing process using a range of synthetic and natural sharpening stones is used to bring each razor back to keen and comfortable shaving sharpness. Finally stropping is performed on one of our cordovan leather strops and the blade is sanitized in Barbicide hospital-grade disinfectant.
