Vintage Imanishi Ohira Tomae. Ohira is a western, Tanba area mine, located on Mt Atago. Ohira's western slope is best known for its production of Suita and "ball type", thick, homogeneous Tomae. Ohira Tomae vary widely in stone characteristics but share a few common traits. While a bit less refined overall than Eastern mines, this Ohira is composed of slightly larger particles which translates to faster, more aggressive cutting speed and a more hazy Kasumi finish. This is a unique Ohira Tomae with its vividly patterned, swirling patterns which fades into the subtle blue base color. This is a solid medium hardness Ohira Tomae with an extremely smooth feel. The stone is quite fast cutting and releases a hint of self slurry when used for polishing knives. Creates black swarf quickly and does an amazing job of scratch removal as its slightly larger and densely packed abrasive particles work quickly and efficiently. Creates an amazing balance of tooth vs refinement on knife/tool edges which translates into a well balanced Kasumi finish as well. Great for refining the process of bringing out details in the cladding and steel and creates a bright, detailed, yet slightly hazy Kasumi finish. Can be used for finishing razors but work must be done to diligently refine the edge via slurry breakdown and light pressure. Works amazing for pre finishing as its slightly larger particles remove previous grit scratches quickly and effectively.
