These Selected Grade Belgian Coticules are size 7 bouts, each with a sharpening surface of approximately 48–58 cm² (7.4–9.0 square inches). Bouts are irregularly shaped and classified by the area of the honing face, so length and width vary from stone to stone. Use the rulers in the photos to compare each hone’s dimensions and proportions.

Selected Grade Coticules are chosen for their cleaner, more uniform appearance, with fewer visible markings and inclusions than Standard Grade stones. Subtle natural variations give each stone its own character. The grade primarily reflects appearance, with both grades well suited to razor honing.

This Belgian Coticule comes from the atelier of Ardennes Coticule, the only remaining producer of these traditional sharpening stones. Prized for honing straight razors, knives, and tools, Coticules combine fast cutting with a fine finish. With appropriate technique and slurry control, they can be used from bevel setting through finishing, or followed by a finer finishing stone according to preference.
