Old Stock Monzento Aoto in extra large format. Monzento are a softer type of Aoto whetstone. Monzento are well revered in Japan for Naka Toishi as they cut efficiently and create a blanket of haze which aids in creating a smooth and even Kasumi finish. This is an extremely old stock stone of high quality which was stored for generation's by our wholesaler. His family was instrumental in creating the Kyoto natural whetstone association. Typically, particle uniformity is the main character trait in which Aoto and monzento are graded by. Monzento are a softer Aoto type and this piece is no exception. Creates rich self slurry which allows for the user to create an even and consistent blanket of haze and removes previous scratches effectively. Sets the stage for a softer stone like Suita/Uchigumori which will refine this Monzento's finish seamlessly. Highly absorbent to moisture so proper upkeep and slow drying in a controlled environment are key with most Aoto/Monzento. Huge squarish shaped piece with rustic, beautiful Kawa attached which is rare to see in Aoto/Monzento. Plenty of usable surface area for all applications.
