From setting a straight razor’s bevel to refining its final edge, the Naniwa Advance Super Stone range offers a versatile selection of Japanese waterstones for controlled sharpening and fine polishing. Formerly known as the Naniwa Super Stone series, Advance stones are available in ten grits, allowing you to build a progression around your razors, knives, and edged tools.

The resin-bonded construction provides a smooth honing feel and convenient splash-and-go use. Simply wet the surface and begin sharpening—no soaking is required. The full-size working surface provides ample room for honing, while the 20 mm thickness offers twice the abrasive depth of the thinner S1 version.

For straight-razor users, the 1,000-grit stone is a practical bevel-setting choice, the middle grits refine the edge, and the 8,000 through 12,000-grit stones provide progressively finer finishing options. The 12,000-grit stone is especially popular for final razor honing.

Sold individually. Select your preferred grit from the menu. Group photographs show the available range; this listing is not a ten-stone set.

Choose Your Grit

Grit Suggested use
220 Heavy stock removal and repair of damaged knife and tool edges. Generally unnecessary for routine razor honing.
400 Coarse sharpening and correction of very dull knife or tool edges.
800 Initial sharpening where more cutting power than a 1,000-grit stone is needed.
1,000 General sharpening and straight-razor bevel setting.
2,000 Intermediate refinement after coarse or medium sharpening; a practical knife finishing option.
3,000 Further edge refinement and preparation for polishing stones.
5,000 Fine honing and polishing; a useful intermediate stage for straight razors.
8,000 Fine finishing for knives and tools, and late-stage straight-razor honing.
10,000 Very fine polishing and razor edge refinement.
12,000 Ultra-fine finishing, particularly suited to straight razors and highly polished edges.

Use & Care

Wet the surface before use and add water as needed while honing. Do not soak or store submerged. Rinse after use and allow the stone to dry thoroughly before storage. Flatten periodically to maintain an even working surface, especially when honing straight razors.

Suggested straight-razor progression: 1,000 → 3,000 → 5,000 → 8,000 → 12,000. Adjust the progression to the condition of the edge; a razor needing only a touch-up may require just the finishing stone. Strop after honing before shaving.
