These are newly quarried and finished green slate hones manufactured by a quarry in the traditional quarrying area in western Vermont near the New York border. Vermont slates were once used commonly as honing stones and these examples have been tested thoroughly and are very fine stones (think 10-12K grit range) and excellent razor or knife finishers. The generous size and ease of use should satisfy beginning and experience razor and knife honers alike, and being a moderately hard stone it should last a lifetime.
We're true fans of the very fine but comfortable silky smooth edge these leave on a good razor.
Each hone measures 8 in. x 3in. x 3 in. thick (offering 4 different equally sized honing surfaces) and includes a matching slurry or rubbing stone. They are flat and smoothly lapped from the quarry and are ready for use for most purposes. For final razor finishing though, or ultimate flatness, they should be hand lapped using your preferred method prior to use.
